Chronology

The Maynards and their children live an almost perfect multi-million dollar family life. Amon is an avid hunter, but he does not shoot animals because the family’s wealth allows them to live completely without consequences.

I saw it at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival

Ayn Rand: The question is, who’s going to stop me? Filmmaker Daniel Hossl and Julianne Niemann have an interesting satirical take on the wealthy class, and while there are some good ideas, it feels underdeveloped and not as powerful as the film believes.

Many of the performances are solid, some of the children’s performances are a little weak

The production design, camera work and color presentation are superb and truly beautiful, helping to capture the atmosphere and essence of the characters. Hoesl and Niemann’s direction, while somewhat haphazard, has a clear vision of what style and atmosphere they’re going for.

Just like there are some good ideas that didn’t quite live up to their desired potential

The narrative is a good concept, but unfortunately it feels as strong as it gets because the story is underdeveloped with some of the themes and the characters don’t feel engaging or interesting enough to connect with emotionally. There are some moments that are shocking, daring and quite strange, and I understand where the filmmakers are coming from and their vision.

But it could have been stronger

But it doesn’t feel fully earned, and the style feels a little too similar to that of Ruben Ostlund or Michael Haneke. Overall it’s not bad as there are some moments that I appreciate.
